Airlines route you through their hubs anyway. The smart ones let you pause there long enough to eat dinner somewhere better than the duty-free Toblerone wall.
A connection can become part of the journey, but the value comes in different forms. Some airlines permit a stop without additional airfare, some provide qualifying transit accommodation, and others sell discounted hotel packages or simply support a fare-dependent multi-city itinerary. The distinction matters. Here are 11 options worth comparing, with the booking conditions that decide whether each one fits.

Reykjavik, Iceland
Icelandair, Up to 7 nights, No extra airfare
Benefit type: no extra airfare stopover
Icelandair basically invented this move back in the 1960s, and it's still the most painless. Flying between North America and Europe? You can stop in Iceland for up to 7 days at no extra airfare, and you add it right there in the online booking flow - no phone calls, no forms. There's no free hotel, but you're not paying for the flight, so a few nights chasing waterfalls and geothermal spas still nets out gloriously.
The catch: Most fares include up to 7 nights; Flex fares can allow longer by contacting Icelandair. Lodging is on you, and date changes can still move the total fare.

Free hotel
Istanbul, Turkiye
Turkish Airlines, 20 hours-7 days, Hotel included
Benefit type: complimentary transit accommodation
This is the crown jewel. On qualifying long-haul connections of 20+ hours, Turkish Airlines hands you a complimentary hotel stay in Istanbul - departures from the US / Canada / Australia / New Zealand get the enhanced allocation: 2 nights (4-star) in economy, 3 nights (5-star) in business. Most other origins get 1 night economy / 2 nights business. You apply after booking your flight. Free bed, free city, endless kebabs. It's almost rude not to.
The catch: It must be an eligible Turkish-operated international round-trip on one booking, with ticket numbers starting 235. Visa, local transfers, and some fare restrictions are still your problem.

Discounted hotel
Doha, Qatar
Qatar Airways, 12-96 hours, From USD 14 pp
Benefit type: discounted stopover package
Through its Discover Qatar program, eligible travelers with roughly 12-96 hour transits can book up to four nights in participating 4- and 5-star hotels, with advertised packages starting around USD 14 per person. Qatar separately accepts transit-accommodation requests for select 8-24 hour connections when no shorter connection is available. That narrower service depends on fare family and may involve fees. The catch: The paid Discover Qatar stopover package is separate from transit accommodation. Both depend on eligibility and availability, and the transit service can carry a fee.

Lisbon or Porto, Portugal
TAP Air Portugal, Up to 10 days, No extra ticket cost
Benefit type: no extra airfare stopover
TAP lets you extend a layover in Lisbon or Porto for several days at no extra airfare, then sweetens it with hotel discounts and a city card for museums and transit. Still, pastel de nata for breakfast is its own kind of loyalty perk.
The catch: TAP verifies eligibility in the booking flow. Hotels are discounted, not free, and it is not available on award points tickets: cash bookings only. This is a TAP ticket feature rather than a universal award-ticket rule.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Benefit type: complimentary transit accommodation
Emirates runs two things, and people mix them up. Dubai Connect gives you a free hotel, meals, and transfers when your layover is long and there's no shorter connection available, with eligibility varying by cabin. Separately, Dubai Stopover packages are paid bundles - hotel, visa, transfers - often at a sharp price. One's a courtesy; one's a deal. Both get you a skyline.
The catch: Dubai Connect only applies when there is no better connection and the fare qualifies. The paid stopover is a deal, not a courtesy.

Panama City, Panama
Copa Airlines, 20h-7 days, No extra airfare
Benefit type: no extra airfare stopover
Copa's Panama Stopover can add 20 hours to 7 days in Panama without an additional fare for one stopover when it is requested with the original ticket. Travelers originating in Brazil may qualify for up to 15 days under Copa's published exception.
The catch: Only one stopover avoids an additional fare, excluded fare classes and ticket-change costs can apply, and hotels remain separate partner offers.

Helsinki, Finland
Finnair, Flexible, Fare-dependent
Benefit type: fare dependent multi city
Finnair quietly allows Helsinki stops on Europe-Asia routes - a smaller, calmer airport and an easy Nordic add-on.
The catch: Finnair confirms stopovers through multi-city bookings, but I would not call this a dedicated free stopover program. Price and availability depend on the exact multi-city fare.

Etihad, Up to 2 nights, Hotel included
Benefit type: complimentary transit accommodation
Etihad can pair an eligible round-trip connection with one or two complimentary room nights at selected hotels in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, giving the journey enough time for culture, beaches, and mangroves.
The catch: A nominal booking fee, local tourism fee, blackout dates, channel restrictions, visa rules, and hotel availability apply. Arrange the hotel at least 72 hours before arrival.

Ethiopian may provide transit accommodation for qualifying long connections in Addis Ababa. When confirmed for the ticket, the pause can become time for proper coffee, a short city visit, or simply a real reset.
The catch: This is a connection service, not a multi-day stopover promise. Ask Ethiopian to confirm the current connection window, hotel voucher, entry requirements, and eligibility for the exact ticket before relying on it.

Benefit type: fare dependent multi city
Singapore is the stopover that behaves like it was designed by someone who hates friction. Changi works, the city is compact, hawker dinner is a short ride away, and Gardens by the Bay can make a one-night pause feel oddly cinematic. Singapore Airlines points travelers to its multi-city and stopover booking flow, then layers in accommodation and experience deals through partners.
The catch: This is not a free-hotel program. The public stopover page supports stopover booking and partner deals; KrisFlyer award stopover rules are separate, and paid stopovers have not been permitted on tickets issued after August 1, 2022.

Benefit type: fare dependent multi city
Cathay makes Hong Kong feel like the stopover was the plan all along: neon ridgelines, harbor ferries, late-night noodles, and enough vertical drama to justify slowing down. Its stopover flow lets travelers choose a Hong Kong pause on the way out or back, then browse hotel and experience offers after the flight is confirmed.
The catch: Cathay is offering stopover booking plus hotel and experience deals, not a free hotel benefit. Treat the stay as a fare and offer play, and check the current deal dates before booking.

Layover vs. stopover?
A layover is a short connection, usually under about 24 hours. A stopover is a deliberate longer pause that lets you leave the airport and treat the hub city like part of the trip.
Do free stopovers cost extra airfare?
Usually no extra airfare, but not always no extra trip cost. Some programs include a hotel, some discount one, and some only make the routing possible.
Can I add a stopover to a points or award ticket?
It varies by airline and program. TAP treats Portugal Stopover as a TAP ticket feature, Qatar's complimentary transit accommodation is narrower than the paid stopover package, and Turkish eligibility depends on ticketing and booking rules.
Will I actually be allowed to leave the airport?
Usually yes, but you must clear immigration. Check visa, e-Visa, and transit-permit rules before you book, especially for Turkey, Qatar, the UAE, and Panama.
How long can a stopover last?
It depends. Icelandair commonly allows up to 7 nights, TAP up to 10 days, Turkish requires 20 hours to 7 days for its hotel benefit, Qatar packages run 12 to 96 hours, and Copa generally permits 20 hours to 7 days, with a longer published exception for Brazil-origin tickets.
